Grand Canyon National Park

The Dragon Bravo Fire on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park exhibited extreme and volatile fire behavior the evening of July 12, resulting in a 500-acre expansion. Fire managers have confirmed the loss of the Grand Canyon Lodge and numerous historic cabins in the developed area.
On July 12, at approximately 10:30 p.m., fire activity intensified rapidly, fueled by sustained winds of 20 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph. Firefighters made significant efforts overnight to slow the fire’s progression under dangerous and fast-changing conditions.
Aerial bucket drops were conducted to slow fire movement near the Grand Canyon Lodge and Transept Canyon. However, the use of aerial retardant was not feasible due to a chlorine gas leak at the water treatment facility, which required the evacuation of firefighting personnel from critical zones nearby.
Preliminary assessments indicate that between 50 to 80 structures have been lost, including NPS administrative buildings and visitor facilities. No injuries or loss of life have been reported, and all staff and residents were successfully evacuated prior to the fire’s escalation.
The fire is being managed with an aggressive full suppression strategy. Fire behavior is still very active, driven by hot temperatures, low relative humidity, and continued strong wind gusts. On July 13, fire managers began ordering retardant drops on the east side of the developed area, including the Roaring Springs drainage, as suppression efforts continue.
With continued active fire behavior and ongoing risks to personnel and infrastructure, the North Rim will remain closed to all visitor access for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Additionally, all inner canyon corridor trails, campgrounds, and associated areas are closed until further notice, including:
➡️North Kaibab Trail
➡️South Kaibab Trail
➡️Phantom Ranch
➡️Bright Angel Trail below Havasupai Gardens
The primary objectives of current fire operations remain:
—Protecting the lives and safety of firefighting personnel and the public,
—Preserving the remaining structures on the North Rim, and
—Safeguarding cultural and natural resources within Grand Canyon National Park.

Grand Canyon National Park

The Dragon Bravo Fire, located on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, continues to show moderate fire activity as it burns in a remote area south of the Basin near the W1 Road. Sparked by lightning on July 4, the fire has grown steadily over the past few days and is currently estimated at approximately 120 acres.
There is currently no threat to public safety or developed areas, though smoke is visible from both the North and South Rim developed areas.
The fire continues to be managed under a confine and contain strategy, which allows for the natural role of fire on the landscape while minimizing the risk to infrastructure and park values.
As of today, approximately 61 personnel are assigned to the incident. A Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command on July 9 to assist with fire management operations. Weather conditions remain favorable for moderate fire behavior, with sunny skies and light winds contributing to a steady rate of spread.
The following areas of Grand Canyon National Park are closed to all visitor use: the Tiyo Point Trail, the Widforss Trail, the Widforss Forest Trail, the NG9 Outlet Canyon Use Area, the NF9 Widforss Use Area, and all NPS lands above the Coconino Sandstone between Dragon Creek and Transept Canyon that are south of the W-1 Point Sublime Road. The W-1 Point Sublime Road is closed between the W-4 segment and at the Arizona Trail crossing. The Arizona Trail remains open. See attached map. The closure began on July 9th, 2025, and will extend to August 9th, 2025, or as soon as the area is safe, whichever is first.

North Rim – Dragon Bravo Fire 🔥– Update (Wed. July 9, 2025)
ALERT: The Widforss Trail and trailhead parking is temporarily CLOSED due to the fire.
Smoke seen settling in the canyon early in the morning is from the Dragon Bravo Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire burning on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Yesterday it was estimated at 27 acres.
The fire is located south of the Basin near the W1 Road and continues to be managed for resource benefit objectives using a confine/contain strategy. This means the fire is being allowed to fulfill its natural role within a defined area, while firefighters take action to limit its spread where necessary. There are no threats to infrastructure or public safety at this time.
Sunny weather and light winds contributed to moderate fire behavior and growth yesterday. Fire crews continue to monitor the fire closely, using real-time weather data and on-the-ground observations to guide management decisions.
Naturally ignited wildfires play an essential role in fire-dependent ecosystems like the North Rim by:
✅Reducing heavy fuel accumulations and converting dead wood to nutrient-rich ash
✅Stimulating new plant growth and maintaining habitat diversity
✅Helping regulate insects and disease
✅Creating a mosaic of burned and unburned vegetation, which can slow future wildfires
Smoke remains visible from the North Rim developed area, South Rim Historic District, and may be noticeable from roads throughout the park.
