Adventurer

For those who seek spectacular outdoor beauty and wild geological wonders, Kanab makes the perfect basecamp for as long as you can stay. But if you’re on a tighter schedule, here’s a suggested itinerary for an adventure-filled 3-day trip that includes tips on getting your hands on a permit to visit the world famous wave.

Day 1

Attend The Wave lottery
The drawing takes place at 9 a.m. (arrive by 8:30 to fill out an application). If a permit is won, it will be for the following day. In the winter months the Grand Staircase Office draws for Saturday, Sunday and Monday’s permits on Friday.

Kanab Creek Bakery
Start your day off with breakfast. Closed Monday’s.

Sand Caves & Belly of the Dragon
Get more info from our Kanab Trails App.

Thunderbird Restaurant
Have lunch and don’t forget the pie.  Learn the history of the “Ho-made” pie and the family-owned business.

Zions National Park
Rent a Slingshot at the Thunderbird and take an afternoon drive.

Zion Mountain Ranch
Enjoy dinner. Return the Slingshot and head back to Kanab.

Star Party Tonight
Enjoy the beautiful southern Utah night sky with the guides.

Basecamp 37
Stay overnight. Seasonal, weather permitting. Other lodging options include: My Star Vacation Rentals, Apple Hollow Cabins, T Lazy 7 Cabins and The Escape.

Day 2

White Pocket
Hike The Wave if the permit was won yesterday. No permit? White Pocket is a great alternative that doesn’t require a permit. With either location we recommend hiring a local guide. Grabbing a sack lunch from Kanab Creek Bakery, Glazier’s Market or Honey’s Marketplace is a great option for lunch to take with you.
